Reverend Gregory Hite, former pastor of St. Peter’s, dies of brief illness


ROSSFORD – Reverend Gregory R. Hite, 66, a former pastor of St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Mansfield, died early Friday morning after a brief illness, according to a parish press release.

Hite, the 13th pastor of St. Peter’s Catholic Church, moved to Mansfield in June after serving the parish since 2011. He retired from active ministry in July, but was eager to continue his priestly ministry as a priest of “higher status”, the statement declared.

When he arrived in St. Peter’s in 2011, the parish owed a million dollars in debt to the Diocese of Toledo, according to the press release. He worked with parishioners to repay this debt and then focused his efforts on restoration of the century-old church. The parish raised $ 2.5 million through the Preserving our past, securing our future Fundraising campaign to restore the interior of the century-old church.

He also led a strategic plan to move the school system forward, and one of his last acts as a pastor was to hire Laurie McKeon as the first principal of St. Peter’s.

In 1994 he was appointed pastor of St. Mary of the Snows parish in Mansfield, until 1999. Before returning to Mansfield, he was president of the Central Catholic High School in Toledo and pastor of St. Jeanne Catholic Church. from Arc to Toledo.
