PH Catholic Church to Host Virtual Eucharist Congress – Manila Bulletin
The Philippine Catholic Church will organize a virtual congress on the Eucharist in solidarity with the 52nd International Eucharistic Congress in Budapest next month.
Bro. Miguel Garcia, executive secretary of the Standing Committee of Bishops for International Eucharistic Congresses (PCIEC), said Sta. Cruz Church in Manila will host the local event on September 11, but all discussions will be pre-recorded and streamed online.
PCIEC had previously planned to send at least 500 delegates to Budapest, but has been suspended due to the prevailing health crisis.
“Unfortunately, we have to cancel the plan due to our situation,” CBCP News said, quoting Garcia.
He said the Archbishop of Cebu, Jose Palma, the current president of PCIEC, was planning to attend the global event.
Garcia said it was traditional for one of the masses during the week-long celebration to be presided over by the bishop of the previous CIS host.
“He (Palma) is doing his best but I’m still waiting for any development,” he said.
The IEC in Budapest will begin on September 5, with Pope Francis scheduled to lead the closing Mass on September 12.
The large religious gathering was originally scheduled for September 2020 but has been postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The IEC was first held in France in 1881 with the aim of increasing devotion to the Eucharist.
It continued to be held once every four years in a different city across the world with the last congress held in Cebu in 2016.
