Phyllis Sequeira Sousa, 67, died with her family by her side on September 22, 2021 after a valiant seven-year battle with cancer. She was born on October 22, 1953 in Madeira, Portugal, to Jose and Anita Silva. She is survived by her two daughters, Angela and Amie, and three grandchildren, Jonathan, Jacob and Sierra. Phyllis had three sisters and two brothers. She was predeceased by her brother, Joe. In addition, Phyllis was loved by several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins. Phyllis came to the United States when she was 8 years old. She didn’t speak English but was determined to create her version of the American Dream. Phyllis was a hard-working businesswoman who ran a landscaping company. She has also invested in real estate around the Bay Area and Portugal. Phyllis was a shining example of a woman who persevered through difficult times and created a life based on resilience and intelligence. Phyllis never forgot her roots and was proud to be a member of the Alvarado Portuguese Hall. During her illness and her fight for life, Phyllis relied on her Catholic faith to give her strength and grace. Phyllis’ will for life came from the love she had for her family and friends.
Above all, Phyllis was a devoted mother. She cherished her children and embraced every moment with them. She particularly liked her role as a grandmother. The pride she felt for her family was unwavering. She had a lively personality and could always laugh with the people she loved the most. She made friends everywhere she went and left a lasting impact on the people around her. Her favorite activities were to be with her family and friends. A great traveler, she loved to explore the world around her. One of her most beloved places was near her home, Half Moon Bay. She loved to savor her favorite Barbara’s Fishtrap clam chowder soup while enjoying the calming sounds of the ocean.
The strength that was Phyllis may have left this earth, but her immeasurable spirit will continue to live in the hearts of those who knew her. The life of Phyllis will be honored on Tuesday, September 28, 2021. The viewing will take place at 9:30 am followed by the Rosary at 10:30 am at the Angles Chapel, 40842 Fremont Blvd, Fremont. The 12:30 pm Catholic Mass will be held at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Fremont. His body will be buried at 2:30 p.m. at the Holy Sepulcher in Hayward.
