Geckos and guinea pigs are also blessed creatures at Morristown Church of the Assumption
By Tara Speer
On Saturday, the parishioners of Church of the Assumption in Morristown gathered to celebrate the feast of St. Francis and the blessing of the animals.
Parish Vicar Rev. Lukasz Wnuk was the celebrant. Also present was Pastor Rev. Mgr. John Hart, as well as beloved cats, dogs, guinea pigs, geckos and fish.
Gathered by the statue of Saint Francis, Fr. Lukasz led the gathered people in the following prayer over their pets:
âDear God, Heavenly Father, Creator of all living creatures, we ask you to bless (name of pet), who brings so much joy to our lives. By the power of Your love, allow it to live according to your plan. May we always praise You for all Your beauty in creation that lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit. Blessed are You, God, in all your creatures!
This was followed by a joyous performance of the beloved hymn, All the creatures of Our God and King.
As parishioners gathered after the animal blessing to take photos, each parishioner shared about their family’s special animal members.
Especially over the past year, everyone has felt a deep gratitude for the wonderful pets God has given us – both in our present and past companions.
The large dogs, cats, horses and other animals that have attended our celebration over the past few years are remembered by all.
Parishioners without animals were also welcomed and encouraged to join in our celebration and meet new people in our Assumption parish family.
Special thanks to the children of the Good Shepherd Level III Catechesis for preparing gift bags with pet treats, Psalm 8 and the icon of Saint Francis and the prayer card.
